A prescribed reading of Architectural education Alexander’s 253 patterns or hypotheses are all tentative, ‘all free to evolve under the impact of new experience and observation.’ Forty years later the question is, are these patterns still sufficient to solve problems of the 21st century? Or should the 'Pattern Language' be understood theoretically to raise issues about quality of life? 'A Living Architecture' is a critical analysis to whether these patterns are capable of responding to time, climate, geographies, cultures, and traditions. My travels will explore Alexanders influence of European vernacular architecture in contrast to other cultures which may require new languages and processes to create a adaptive and generative architecture of today's post-industrial society. |
